The City of Tukwila is encouraging everyone that lives, works, or plays in Tukwila to sign-up to receive emergency alerts. Signing up is FREE and EASY!
Alert King County is our First Line of Communication for Emergency Information. Alert King County is an “opt-in” emergency mass notification system that allows first responders to communicate emergency, life safety information to everyone that has signed up. It is the easiest way to quickly get
critical, life-safety information to our residents.
Alert King County allows you to:
- Choose How to Receive Emergency Information. Receive emergency notifications by cell phone, landline, email, or all three.
- Enter Multiple Addresses. Enter your home address, your work address, or other places you’ll spend time to get emergency messages targeted for your area.
- Cancel or Change Your Information at any time. If you need to change your contact information or if you no longer wish to receive alerts, you can update your information or cancel at any time.
- Select Your preferred language. You can now receive alerts in English, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, Russian, Korean, French, Portuguese, and Chinese. More languages are being added regularly.
Your Information Remains Private. The information that you put into Alert King County is confidential. It cannot be accessed by anyone in Tukwila government and is NOT sold or released to anyone.

If we can’t reach you, we can’t communicate with you.
Water Safety Information
Dear King County families,
Welcome to summer 2023! With children finishing school and about to be out of daily classes, many will visit local pools, rivers, streams lakes, and Puget Sound for swimming. Water recreation is a popular summertime activity here in King County. To ensure you and your family have fun, King County is sharing ways you can plan and make safety your goal.
While most kids enjoy swimming safely, preventable drownings and other tragic situations sadly happen every year. Preventable drownings in King County have continue to remain elevated with 29 fatalities in 2022,
including 16 deaths in open water. In 2021, 29 people also died. In 62% of those open-water drownings, a life jacket may have saved the person’s life.
Public Health – Seattle & King County advises:
- Wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when swimming if no lifeguards are present, and while boating, tubing, or rafting. Children ages 12 and younger are required by law to wear a life jacket on any vessel under 19 feet.
- Ensure all family members know how to swim before going in the water.
- Watch children closely when they are in or near any type of water; always stay within touching distance of small children.
- Never use alcohol, marijuana, or other impairing drugs during water and boating activities.
- Learn CPR. Visit www.kingcounty.gov/cpr for training information on Hands-Only CPR.
Dangerous river conditions:
River recreation is inherently dangerous. No lifeguards are on duty and conditions are always subject to change. Throughout the summer, King County rivers will have cold, fast flows from this year’s late snowmelt. Rocks and gravel shift seasonally along rivers, changing the nature of local swimming holes. In some areas, shallow water will seem warm, but any moving or deep water will be very cold, which could result in cold water incapacitation or hypothermia.
When planning a boating or floating trip:
- Always tell someone your route and when and where you expect to put in and take out.
- Never float a river alone and, if possible, make sure there is at least one craft with oars in your group in case a rescue is needed.
- Bring a dry bag with food, water, and warm clothes.
For more information and where to find life jackets visit the King County Rivers Safety website at www.kingcounty.gov/riversafety or search for the “Washington State Parks Life Jacket Loaner Map.” Coupons for
20% off regular price of any life jacket in stock at Big 5 Sporting Goods are available through the Seattle Children’s Drowning Prevention Network at seattlechildrens.org/dp.
We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer.

Week of Solidarity
Showalter celebrated the Week of Solidarity (1/17-1-20). The purpose of this week was to build solidarity in our school community and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his quest for liberation. Our goals were to understand:
-
Our identities and roles as individuals, and as part of a community, and,
-
The many forms that racism takes so that we can continue to take anti-racist action. This action, when taken in solidarity with others, is what will move us all to liberation.
The entire school worked toward these goals, and celebrated at the end of the week with a group project and our first all-school assembly since COVID!

Spotlight on our Multilingual Learning Team
Showalter is fortunate to have have a strong support team for our MLL students who are working toward English language fluency. The team members are Clair Chean, Carrie Stradley, Jessie Kuwada, Selma Malkic, and Minh Royer. They support students, teachers, and staff to ensure a strong system of learning for our MLL students in all content areas. As part of this support, the team will be doing “MLL Walks,” starting next week. These walks will be used to support and offer suggestions to improve our instruction,
I spoke with the MLL coaches about what they like best about their jobs. They highlighted the communication with their team members, being able to work with students and families, and building a strong AVID EXCEL community as their favorite parts of the job. Our students are thriving with their support. Thank you for all you do MLL Team!
Spotlight on Physical Education
Physical Education is an important part of every student’s experience as Showalter. Our PE team, Louis D’Andrea and Sara Summerford (pictured), work hard teach students to enjoy physical activity on a daily basis. When I asked Ms. Summerford what she liked most about her job said that her favorite part is that “students are given an opportunity to collaborate and cooperate with each other while participating in health-enhancing physical activity. Seeing the student's smiles and hearing their laughter while they are being physically active together is extremely rewarding!” The students are certainly enjoying it, too. Way to go P.E. team!

Staff Spotlight - Ms. Cameron
Namaste! My name is Ms. Cameron and I am the Attendance Secretary at Showalter Middle School. I am from New York, the Big Apple, and a proud parent of a beautiful daughter. In September of 2010, I began my career at Tukwila School District as an ELL/MLL Paraeducator at Showalter and then later went on to become the Assessment Specialist at Cascade View Elementary for four years. I am so delighted to work in a vibrant, multicultural school community, which represents a glorious array of ethnicities and nationalities—out of many we are one! Also, in 2018, I had the wonderful opportunity to teach English in the Middle East and it was truly a dream come true!
In my spare time, I enjoy reading, listening to music, traveling, and helping children in need at World Vision, a humanitarian organization. I consider myself incredibly lucky to be a part of the Tukwila School District and always happy to support our students and families the best way I can!
Education Support Professional Day - November 16
Taking care of our students is a big job. A job that couldn’t be done well without our Education Support Professionals (ESPs). They support students in a variety of ways in and outside of the classroom. Our ESPs at Showalter are amazing and always go above what’s expected to provide the best environment for our students. Happy Support Professionals Day!
Proposed Revisions to Director Districts
Because of population changes reflected on the 2020 census, Tukwila Schools are proposing changes to the geographic boundaries of our director districts.
The Tukwila School District is divided into five geographic districts, one for each board seat. Candidates for the school board must run for the seat of the district they live in. By creating five equal director districts, geographic diversity is ensured on the school board.
These boundaries are completely unrelated to school attendance boundaries; this process will not change any neighborhood school boundaries.
In October 2022, the District contracted with Sammamish Data Systems to develop a proposal for new director district boundaries based on the latest census data. The proposed new director district boundaries would balance the populations in all districts so that each would have roughly the same number of residents.
Visit our website for more information, including the current and proposed Director District Map: https://www.tukwilaschools.org/news-events/direct-link-news-events/~board/tukwila-school-district/post/proposed-revisions-to-director-districts
